Dear UDressers,

I hope you've found time to unwind after the rapid pace of The Movement. In the issue past we tested the limits of our physicality and the strength of our garments. The Movement was a powerful force that took on a life of its own...your life! I could not be prouder of each and every one of you for pushing The Movement above and beyond.

But everything has a counterpart.
Every moment of motion is faced with a moment of stillness.
Fall fixated on the body, but spring is all about the mind. Spring 2011 is...

The V i s i o n a r y Issue
Conceptual Fashion

Where does fashion take your mind?
Let's transcend labels, time and space to a place that is truly out of this world.
Shift your vision to l
ook at life through a different lens where the real meets the surreal, dark embraces light and confusion is clarity.

This issue is your unique platform for expression and abstraction. Open up your eyes and let's create something extraordinary.

See you on the other side.

xx Samantha

Fall 2010 Issue Theme Release PDF Print E-mail

Dear UDressers,

As the summer speeds ahead, I encourage you to think about UDress and the upcoming fall issue. I proudly present to you the Fall 2010 theme:

The Movement Issue
fashion in motion

Being in New York City this summer made me realize how quickly the world is moving. The second you catch up, it is ten steps ahead of you. Being a part of this world made me hunger for more--in these few months I have taken salsa classes, interned 60 hrs per week, gone to weekly meditation, shopped at the best thrift stores, eaten the best food and explored every nook of this beautiful city. All because I was moved to do so.

This issue, I want to explore this motion. There are many types of movement underway: social,  career, music, art, political... the movement never stops. With technology, communication, and worldwide collaboration, things are moving ahead faster than ever before.

Rather than being overwhelmed by this movement, I encourage you to use it to your advantage.
Find what makes you move.
Energy feeds energy--let it propel you. If you notice, anything you do with passion succeeds.
There's a meaning behind this. That meaning is movement.

In relation to fashion, I will focus on line, silhouette, and a dark palette that accentuates these features. How has your own closet progressed? Look inside and it will tell a story you didn't even see in the making. You have lived many lives in this one life, so it seems.

Be a part of the movement. Search, discover, explore. Never stop moving.

Cheers,

On January 5, 2010 she was named the new creative director of Polaroid. "Lifestyle, music, art, fashion: I am so excited to extend myself behind the scenes as a designer, and to as my father puts it--finally, have a real job," said Gaga on the partnership. Products will be hitting stores late this year.

One of the many perks of being a TONY intern - free v.i.p. tickets to this year's theatrical spectacular Fringe Festival!!

...ok, so the tickets are only $15 for everyone else.
And "spectacular" might be a slight embellishment.

But it is theater! And that stuff doesn't come cheap nowadays. So check out the festival in its final week (through August 30th) and get immersed in the low-budget dramarama. Here's my review of one of the 201 festival shows, First Dark.

Dare to be your own critic. Go with an open mind and don't expect Broadway bedazzlement . You might find that you prefer the raw, uncut nature of these indie performances.

Or... you might be entirely freaked out. But for that price, I say heck, why not?!

Street Beat: Oxfords PDF Print E-mail

Oxford shoes are without a doubt the most notable trend in New York street fashion. A modern spin on a collegiate classic, they were previously spotted exclusively on the toesies of businessmen and jazz musicians (yawn).

Recently, these kicks received a reputation makeover after being adopted by the nouveau cool group (translation: hipsters). They skyrocketed up the social stratosphere, and quickly attained the prestige of a must-have item. Suitable for both men and women, oxfords look their best when dressed down.
Pair with a vintage frock, high-waisted trousers or a distressed vest and voila! You're instantly en vogue.

Here's a few of my favorites on the market. Make sure you get 'em before they're gone...or before they're mass produced by Forever 21 and lose all cool factor.

Buffalo Exchange PDF Print E-mail

332 E. 11th Street, East Village

(Real) definitions of the word "Buffalo":

1. A large shaggy-haired brown bison

2. A city on Lake Erie in western New York

3. A shuffling tap-dance step

Initially I found myself rather perplexed by this so-called “Buffalo Exchange" (and rightfully so).  When sent there to select attire for an upcoming photo shoot, I half expected to encounter a bizarre scenario involving wild oxen and awkward dance moves.

To my delight, I stumbled upon one helluva thrift shop. And the concept is actually simpler than it sounds. Old clothes = money in the bank. Bring in your preloved wares, they price’em, and you get 30% cash of what it’s worth or 50% store credit.

One look around and you'll want the store credit. All attire goes through a rigorous selection process before hitting the floor, resulting in a trendy mix of steals ‘n’ deals.

Why they chose to name their store after a mammoth-like creature, I'll never know. But I'm willing to look past it.

Fort Greene, Brooklyn: the home of beautiful brownstones, outdoor dining, and laid-back livin'.

Last week TONY sent me on a mission to review a freshly planted florist. And I couldn't help but mix business with pleasure. Join me as I venture through unknown territory and love every second of it.

First stop: Stem

112 South Oxford St

I stepped into this flower shop and was instantly transported to a different land and time (somewhere in Europe circa The Notebook, to be exact). A time when romance flourished and life was leisurely. Fedora-sporting owner Rado Bomba was simply charming and fit the part splendidly. He even graced me with a complimentary bouquet on my way out.

Check out my write up but trust me: you need to see it to believe it.

Second stop: Bittersweet
180 Dekalb Ave
After stopping by Stem, I had to hunker down and write. Rado personally recommended Bittersweet because of its free Wi-Fi and stellar caffeinated beverages. Though small in stature, Bittersweet packed a punch. Flooded with hipsters
and sweet beats - it was the perfect place to type the afternoon away.

Third stop: Sushi D
207 Dekalb Ave
I opted for the Caterpillar roll (spicy tuna w/ avocado) which proved to be an exceptional choice. Outdoor dining provided prime people watching as I scoped out the Fort Greene scene. Pedestrians were not in a hurry - most were doing the good old stop 'n' chat (more suburban than urban for sure). Quite a change from the fast lane, but refreshing nonetheless.

Final stop:
Fort Greene Park
85 South Oxford St
The name is self explanatory. Frisbees a-flyin', kids a-frolickin', meadows aplenty....I guess a tree really does grow in Brooklyn.
