Although summer is almost over, there are still a few poolside days left. There are lots of reports on how bad tanning is (sorry, Snooki), so heed this advice on how to apply sunscreen:
1) If you're planning on lounging by the pool or romping on the beach, try to apply sunscreen before you put on your suit. Apply sunscreen to your entire (naked) body, in case your suit should slip or shift, all of your bod will be protected.
2) If you can't apply sunscreen in the buff, ask a friend to help spray you while you stand like a starfish. Spray inside your suit at the edges (you can do this yourself). Places where the suit ends and your skin begins, (like your bust, back, legs, etc.) should get a dash of sunscreen just in case your suit moves while you're prancing about.
3) Make sure you cover your ears and the tops of your feet. These are commonly forgotten but hurt a lot if they get burnt! Ladies, make sure to cover the area where your bra would lie.
4) Apply liberally and re-apply every one and half to two hours while in the sun, ocean or pool.
5) Wear a hat, apply hair sunscreen, and wear your fabulous sunnies (ones that you don't mind getting a little cruddy from sunscreen, chlorine and sand). When you're not in the water, try and cover yourself with a sarong, umbrella or a big tree.
Protect your skin now, and it'll love you later!

In the fall of my freshman year at Delaware I started to develop daily tension headaches. I consulted several doctors, all of whom determined that there was nothing wrong. I didn't want to go on medication, or take painkillers around-the- clock, so I figured I'd just have to stick it out.
Nearly a year later, one of my roommates, an active tea enthusiast introduced me to "Tension Tamer," a caffeine free, 100% natural herbal tea made by Celestial Seasonings. She too suffered from headaches and insisted that it helped them tremendously. Since I learned about Tension Tamer, I drink it almost every night with a little bit of honey. I would strongly recommend that anyone who deals with stress, especially stress that manifests itself into any kind of physical pain gives this miracle tea a try. If not for that reason, buy a box for its sheer deliciousness!
As Charlie Baden, Celestial Seasonings "Blendmaster" since 1975 so eloquently writes on the Tension Tamer box, "Bring harmony to your hectic day with a cup of this flavorful and restorative tea." Side note: I'm typically into black teas like English Breakfast and Early Grey. I was hesitant to try Tension Tamer just because I'm not a huge fan of herbal teas. However, the peppermint, ginger and lemon blend together into a taste that I have not tired of after almost of year of drinking it. |

With summer now in full swing, it’s time to pay attention to your fingers and toes and polish them up! Save your summer cash and get creative by taking your old nail polish colors and mixing them into sweet summer shades. Follow these steps to mix your used and abused hot pink polish, last year’s navy polish, and your white polish into a lovely lavender shade.
Supplies:
1 Dixie cup
A bottle of your favorite hot pink nail polish
A bottle of blue nail polish
A bottle of white nail polish
Step 1: Drip 20 drops of hot pink polish, 6 drops of blue polish, and 10 drops of white polish into a Dixie cup.
Step 2: Clean off one of your nail polish brushes and mix the three polishes together. If the purple shade is too dark for you, keep adding drops of white until you reach the desired shade of purple.
Step 3: Paint your nails with your new unique shade. If the polish mixture becomes too dry or too thick, add a few drops of clear nail polish. Enjoy!

Want another fun combo? Try mixing 20 drops blue polish, 6 drops lime green polish and 10 drops white polish to make a pretty light aqua color.
Have any new polish combos of your own? Leave a comment and let our UDressers know! |

Over the summer, I tend to change my nail color at least once a week. Maybe it's because I have more free time on my hands or because summer's the time to show off your toes. Regardless, I've gotten into the habit of losing myself in the world of nail polish, and dropping coin every time I stumble upon a color that strikes my fancy.
That being said, I was absolutely delighted when recently, while moseying around CVS, I came across a brand of nail polish that I had never seen before: Confetti. Priced at only $1.99, this polish is an absolute steal. Since I bought my first bottle, about 2 weeks ago, I've returned twice to try out different shades. And, since the supply at my local CVS has substantially depleted, it looks like others have discovered my secret. Confetti comes in countless bright and subtle colors (my current standing favorite is "beach dancing") and it lasts longer than many more expensive brands. Since I'm lifeguard, my nails endure the daily test of chlorine and sun tan lotion. Confetti has passed that test with flying colors (no pun intented).
So, toss some paper confetti in the air, bake a confetti cake, and give Confetti nail polish a try. You'll start to feel like everyday is a party!

Okay everyone, here’s a quick quiz: Who is the Queen of avant-garde, partial to jewel-encrusted lobsters, one who LOVES to stir up some drama (flipping fans the bird at a Mets game), and one who moonlights as a male model? Well that’s for you to decide. (For those of you who have no idea who I’m talking about, its time to come out from under that rock of yours!)
Recently, pictures have leaked online of what appears to be Gaga dressed as a male model, sparking quite a debate in the celeb gossip world. No one is really sure since the spread has not been officially released to the public (it will appear in the September issue of Vogue Hommes Japan). You can take a look for yourself at the pictures below. In my opinion, it looks an awful lot like her; the bone structure on this mystery man (or woman) strikingly resembles the Manhattan-born Alejandro singer.
So it’s your call. Are we staring down an imposter? Or are we looking into the future of modeling? Androgyny is coming back and maybe Gaga is just trying to give it a little boost. I guess we’ll just have to wait until September and see…

P.S. Nicola Formichetti, Lady Gaga’s make-up artist, leaked the pictures online. Does that make you believe? |

Finally, my prayers have been answered. (Cue the choir and sound the bells). The manicure gods at O.P.I have created a non-chipping line of polish. And I’m sure I’m not alone when I say it’s about time! If you’re like me, and feel naked without any nail polish and cringe at the thought of breaking a nail, the new Axxium Gel System line is perfect for you. The gel is applied right over your nails to strengthen and protect them without looking fake.
Colors range from flirty light pinks and neutrals to seductress navy and blackberry and come in a spectrum of your favorite O.P.I colors. The application will be flawless for about two weeks before you need a touch up due to nail growth. Whenever you want a new color, just sit back and soak your nails in the removal solution and in about 15 minutes your real nail will be revealed perfectly intact.
There is one catch: as of now, this is only available in salons. If your favorite manicurist doesn’t have this new technology yet, keep asking. This trend is sure to grow just as fast as your perfectly manicured nails. So, take a break from your exhausting social lives and hectic summer jobs and walk/run/drive down to your local salon and take an hour to pamper yourself. You deserve it. You nails will thank you later. |

Every so often, I feel the need to make some kind of change. This weekend, the extreme summer heat and humidity put me in the mood for a makeover. I was in search of something more manageable that would withstand the hot summer days. I decided I was ready to be rid of my demanding highlights and get back to my natural hair color. However, on my tight intern budget, finding an affordable salon was tricky, especially in New York City! After a little research, I came across a fantastic deal. The Carsten Aveda Institute in Union Square offers relatively low prices for services performed by the school's students. Though slightly skeptical at first, I called and made an appointment for the next day.
When I arrived at the salon, I was greeted by a nervous looking student and his instructor. The pair sat with me for nearly 15 minutes and talked about what I wanted and how we should go about achieving it. I was impressed! Though the process was slow (my stylist had to check with his instructor each step of the way), I ended up with a great new hair color, at half the price of my usual salon. It gets even better: I was offered a complimentary manicure while I was waiting for my color to set! If you're feeling brave, call and make an appointment! Here are some of the services offered:
Carsten Aveda Institute: (212) 675-4884 http://carsteninstitute.com/ 22 East 17th Street Hair cut: $19 Blow-dry: $17 Color: $38 and up Eyebrow wax: $11

Ok, so the summer weather has been…interesting to say the least in Newark, DE so far. We have had two monsoon-like storms, hail the size of golf balls, blinding lightening, and then some absolutely gorgeous sunny days perfect for poolside tanning. All this craziness in humidity and temperature has made my daily makeup routine more and more difficult.
Some problems I have been having are smudging and melting eyeliner, foundation cakey-ness, and flat oily hair. I know you’re not supposed to wash your hair everyday, but when I’m outside in 98 degree weather I simply refuse go to bed with grease galore on my head.
Thanks to reading up on some resolutions to these issues, I’ve found three products that have saved my summer.
1. Smudging Eyeliner
Ever look in the bathroom mirror after spending a few hours outside at a BBQ or at the beach and it looks like you haven’t slept in weeks? Welcome to my life. I have tried to not wear eyeliner, but it’s like my drug and I’m not ready to go to rehab to stop using it. So, I found that putting some Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion on both upper and lower lids really hold not only eyeshadow, but eyeliner in place throughout the day. Just make sure to not glob it on because this little bottle goes fast!

2. Foundation Overload
I hate wearing foundation in the summer. But sometimes I put on a little to cover up a blemish…then some more to blend it…then more to make my complexion even…you get my point. So how can you get flawless summer skin with minimal coverage? Try Bare Escentuals’ bareMinerals SPF 15 Foundation. Its loose powder is delicate and light, but gives you even skin and sun protection all in one.

3. Greasy Hair
Straight hair seems to be the style of preference for most of us, but I’m getting tired of blow drying and straightening with hot hair tools when I’m already spending time in the summer heat. So, I wanted to create a “beachy” look with effortless waves. After washing my hair I use aquage’s sea salt texturizing spray that builds volume and makes my hair comparable to the sexy summer waves of any VS bikini model.

Does the name “Tiffani Mitchell” sound familiar? What about “Make-up by Tiffani?” You might be a fan of her Facebook page, or might have seen her work in our Spring 2010 issue of UDress in the Zodiac photoshoot. 22-year-old local and professional make-up artist, Tiffani Mitchell is showing people all over Delaware just what she is made of.
Tiffani says she started doing professional make-up about two years ago, but was always inspired by the art of make-up. In fact, she says she has watched some YouTube videos in her earlier days to start with learning the basics. But, of course she has what you really need most, talent. Tiffani says, “I’m really lucky that it came pretty natural to me because I love it!”
She has more fun doing creative make-up that most people wouldn’t wear on a daily basis because she believes the “face is truly a blank canvas” and you can use it to its full potential to create any sort of design or look. But Tiffani also can tone down her wild and innovative side and create classic looks. She offers her services to those in want of a new looks for their wedding, bridal party, or prom.
For UDress, Tiffani was able to give us more information on her personal preferences. She says that her favorite make-up brand is MAC cosmetics because its color products “are highly pigmented and have long wear.” As for advice Tiffani suggests that you moisturize before putting on primer and blend face make-up and shadows carefully. In fact, the most skipped step that people take in their daily make-up routine is applying a foundation primer (Tiffani suggests Smashbox Photo-finish Oil-free primer). One more thing that is crucial for anyone hoping to achieve a picture perfect look is make-up brushes, “It's really important to invest in a good set of brushes--they will last you for years!” Tiffani says.
Interested in going into the world of professional make-up design? Take Tiffani’s word and “Just do what I did and browse the Internet for tips and tricks. There are some amazing artists that spend all their time making videos for others to learn the trade. If you are talented, the next step would be to get your work out there for all your friends to see!”

Do you pass by Sephora and tell yourself, “I will not give in, I will not give in!” over and over until you eventually find yourself trying on every tester of Dolce & Gabbana perfume and every lip gloss from Urban Decay to Clinique? If not, then I give you credit for your willpower. But if you do, well then you’re just like most of us…or at least me.
I tend to always try every lip gloss I can get my hand on whether in Macy’s, Sephora, or Ulta. Testers are my best friends. Yet, I find that some are way too colorful where they resemble lipstick, or they are too sticky. I don’t want them to be as dull as Chap Stick, but I cannot find that perfect medium. You would think an $18 lip gloss would do its price justice!
To my astonishment, I found the perfect gloss that gave me the right amount of color, moisture, shine, and not to mention yummy taste all for under $6. NYX Mega Shine lip gloss is truly my new favorite lip item. Its wand applicator and smooth texture make it perfect to put over lipstick or just alone for summer! You can find NYX cosmetics at Ulta and online at www.nyxcosmetics.com. Try one out for yourself.
My ideal shade? #155 "Perfect." I guess the name says it all!
