I stepped onto the corner of 34th and 7th Avenue, from my Queens commute into New York City, and stared in shock at the giant building, located next to Madison Square Garden. It was the first day of my summer internship at GradeGuru.com, a McGraw-Hill Education startup. I worked for GradeGuru as a campus brand ambassador at UD during the spring. My job was to promote awareness of the site and introduce it to UD students on campus. GradeGuru, a free knowledge-sharing network, allows college students to share their study materials and find class specific notes, in exchange for rewards, internships and career opportunities.

At the end of the semester, I applied for a summer internship with GradeGuru at their corporate office. I scored a summer filled with the promise of gaining real PR, social media, event planning and marketing experience.

Dressed in a dark teal dress, black cardigan and patent leather flats, I put on my best "I'm totally confident and not at all scared" face and followed the other businessmen and women into the building. After meeting with my managers and my fellow intern, I got straight to work. On my first day, I researched social media case studies and drafting pitches for student and professor outreach.

I've been working for GradeGuru for three weeks, and everyday there is something new to do.  So far, I've learned a lot about different social media initiatives, personal and professional outreach and public relations efforts. Additionally, I contribute to the company blog (http://gradegurublog.com/), which covers college life, higher education, social media and education technology news. However, my biggest project so far has been working on the Fall 2010 Campus Brand Ambassador program. I've helped revamp the program by organizing résumés, assisting with phone interviews and keeping in contact with potential candidates for the job. I'm really excited to challenge myself and take on more projects over the next two months!
