College only lasts four (or five...) years, but the memories you make here will last a lifetime. Here are just a few stories of those times you'll never forget.
"Freshman year I was in a 200-person macroeconomics class, taught by a notoriously strict professor who's a stickler when it comes to drinks, food, tardiness, and especially cell phones. Spring semester I had just got a new phone and so I had an extra phone that was burning a hole in my pocket. My friend, Keith and I came up with the bright idea of keeping the service on my old phone and placing it under someone's seat, beneath a sheet of paper and he would call it while I was in class. In the middle of the lecture, Keith calls it and the phone rings, so the professor stopped his lecture and said something along the lines of, 'Who's phone is that? Go ahead, pick it up.' Since it wasn't anyone's phone it continued to ring and ring, and the kids that were sitting near the phone were squirming in their seats. Once again the professor said, 'Go ahead sir, pick up your phone,' but of course it just kept ringing and ringing, and the kids kept squirming and squirming, until it stopped. After class the kids found the phone and refused to give it back to me. Finally that night in the dining hall they gave me back my phone-after buying a few games on my account..."-Sean, Senior, Accounting and Finance
"I'm on the soccer team and last semester was the first year in university history that we won the championship. We had three games in four days and we needed to win all three games. We had to or we'd have no chance. We weren't allowed to make any mistakes. Everyone was serious and focused on the game. It was stressful, but if we lost, our season was over. We played in California against UCLA which was a great experience because we came with nothing and left with the championship. Being a part of the team is really special because we have so many international guys-two from Ghana, two from Ireland, two from Spain, one from Germany, one from Israel and I'm French-everyone brings something different and there are a lot of different cultures, but we're all friends." -Yoan, Sophomore, Computer Science
"Freshman year my floor was really into pranks and we decided to switch the male and female bathroom signs as well as the posters in the bathroom. The prank idea was exactly what we were looking for; it was funny and did not damage any property. After making a tool that could remove the unconventional screws in the bathroom signs we sent out text messages to everybody on our floor to alert them of the plan. Once we were sure everybody was okay with the plan a small group of us proceeded to switch the posters and signs. Everything went smoothly until the next morning when our RA went into the old female bathroom-which was now the new male bathroom-to wash up and was not happy to find a male resident at the sink. While the other RAs in the building found the prank funny and privately high-fived us, our RA was furious and went straight to the complex coordinator. Ultimately, we were able to laugh at the prank as our meeting with the complex coordinator simply resulted in a warning and an apology letter to the floor." -Ralph, Senior

Something much brighter than the usual trends is lighting up the fashion world this spring. Usually, it is enough to shed the dark grays and blacks that dominate the world in the winter and opt for the usual florals and brighter colors to be in fashion for warmer weather. However, things are different this season. While it is always acceptable for one to don the traditional spring clothing, those in the know this season are taking it one step further.
The brighter the color, the better. In the past, neon colors have been saved for motel signs. Not any more. What could possibly say spring more than a shock of the brightest possible shade of a color? Neon yellows, blues, oranges, pinks, and greens dominated the runway this season, and they should dominate Newark as well. I raided the 5 and 10 the other day looking for the loudest bright colored shirt I could find. After deliberating for some time between a hot pink Delaware pinnie and a hot orange Delaware pinnie, I finally decided on the orange. Couldn't be happier with my choice. Some tips for wearing neons:
Wear only one neon basic. By basic I mean a shirt or pants. Wearing a hot orange neon top with jeans is enough to make a statement. I would say wear both neon pants and a neon shirt only if you intend to completely blow away the crowd. This stuff is toxic-in a good way. Just by adding the tiniest neon accessory like a watch or painting your nails a loud hot pink, you can take your look from drab to fab. If you don't want to be loud about it, just a hint of the shade is enough for your outfit to pop.
When debating which color neon is right for you, think about which color you normally look good in, and then buy the corresponding neon. Neons are just other colors accentuated, so if you look good in say yellow, you will look GREAT in neon yellow. Have fun! |

Dear Caroline,
What's a trend to look out for this spring?
In anticipation for warm nights out, I have been coveting unexpected cut-outs. Whether a front or back detail, cut-outs are simply so cool. While bare backs have been all the rage in the cut-out trend, the silhouette I'm currently loving is rib cage cut-outs. This is a flattering look for most figures considering the rib area is the slimmest part of most women's torsos. This cut-out trend would be a great DIY project!
3 Current Loves:

1.) Lovely lemon maxi skirt with accordion pleats 2.) Floral braid 3.) Ali McGraw obsessed, always |

This may seem a bit like jumping the gun, but when the first nice springish day hit Delaware, I decided that not only for that day, but for the rest of the week, I would refuse to wear more than just a light jacket. This worked for the first two days, but on the third day, when I left my dorm at precisely 11:00 am in no more than a red tee shirt and a light denim jacket, and, of course, my banging shades, I was overwhelmed with chilling gust of rain-filled wind. I couldn't go back to my dorm because I was already late for class, so I had no choice but to suffer through three classes, walking around main street, and a walk back to my dorm, getting absolutely soaked to the bone in ice-cold rain. Don't you ever wish you could beat the weather? I have no magic potion, but I have devised a system that works most days. All you need is a thermometer, or an iPhone-whatever's handy.
60-70˚- Time to get out your cute tee shirts (with jeans) 50-60- Be ready to have the tee shirt with the light sweater look, but I'd bring a heavier jacket just in case. Better safe than sorry if it's unexpectedly windy. 40-50 - Get out your heavy jackets, and layer underneath with a good warm sweater. It's gonna be cold! 30-40˚- Don't even bother going outside! |

Dear Caroline,
What is the new "it" belt? I definitely have fallen victim to this in the past but I REALLY do not care for thick, plastic-y pleather belts used to cinch an oversized blouse or tight body con dress. The silhouette that those chunkers create is off-kilter and they almost always, cheapen any outfit. Not to be a hater, I love belts and think their versatility and wearability make them universal. I prefer delicate, detailed or classic leather belts. With that, a belt trend I am dying over is thick, metal belts in gold, silver and rose gold. A sleeker and chicer take on my previously mentioned horror.

3 Current Loves: 1) Distressed collar 2) Karlie Kloss...always 3) Hunters with a feminine touch

Spring is just around the corner, which means it's time to reinvent your wardrobe! Step it up second semester and incorporate these straight-from-the-runway trends into your closet.

Sporty Chic
Athletic inspired clothing isn't just reserved for the football team. Designers like Alexander Wang are incorporating mesh, stripes and drawstrings into their collections. This look isn't just cute, it's super comfortable as well. Wear these awesome sneaker wedges from Urban Outfitters with a pair of skinny jeans or shorts to get just the right amount of sporty edginess.
Pretty Pastels
Shades of pastel like mint, lemon, lavender, melon, and peach not only sound good enough to eat, but are perfect for springtime. Philip Lim and Louis Vuitton are fans of these feminine hues, and both brands used pastels in their latest collections. Try on these pale pink skinny jeans from American Eagle and pair them with a motorcycle jacket to keep your outfit from looking overly sweet.
Bold Florals
Floral prints are an obvious choice for spring, but put aside your dainty and ditsy prints to make room for a bold statement. Peter Som's runway show was exploding with big, vibrant floral prints on everything from pants to evening gowns. Put on this Urban Outfitters floral print blazer to get some attention. Don't be afraid to wear other bright colors with this fun jacket. |

Dear Caroline,
What do you suggest as an alternative to the shoulder bag?
We have all experienced the ease and security of going out with a shoulder bag. However, I am a bit over the whole look in general, and I feel like there are so many other purse options being neglected. To set yourself apart, I suggest an ultra, over-sized clutch. I have been seeing them everywhere, and they not only hold more than a mini shoulder bag, but they also instantly make you look delicate and ever-so-chic. Try an over-sized clutch of supple leather in a bright hue or shoot for a wilder look with an animal print or studded option.

3 Current Loves:
1) Stacked heavy metal
2) Floral Docs
3) Plush fur collars

The more the temperature drops, the more layers we must put on in order to keep warm. But just because the air may be frigid doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your style! These fabulous accessories will not only keep you nice and toasty in the long winter months to come, but they truly make a statement as well.
1. Beanies & Berets - There are endless styles and colors of this classic winter accessory. Not only do they add some flair to your cold weather ensemble, but they also keep your head warm. Check out this cute beanie from Forever 21!
2. Flower Adorned Ear Warmers - Function and fashion meet with this cute headband. These protect you ears from the brisk winter winds while adding the perfect touch of feminine flair.
3. Colorful Scarves - This winter necessity truly helps to keep you nice and bundled up. Flaunting a scarf in a bright color will make your outfit pop in the dreary and drab winter weather.
4. Faux Fur - By finding a reasonably priced piece of fake fur, your outfit can be turned from ordinary to elegant within seconds! Faux fur items are everywhere in winter gear, from scarves to shawls to vests to full on jackets, keeping you wonderfully warm.

Always remember - fashion is what you make it to be, and dress to be you!
