‘70s Inspired Nail Colors for Fall 2019

‘70s Inspired Nail Colors for Fall 2019

Fall – the time for sweater weather, pumpkin spice, cozy boots, and (of course) great manicures. Now that the bright summer colors have finally drawn to a close, fall nail colors are all about deep warm toned shades inspired by the 1970s. Here are 7 shades that you will see throughout this season.

Mustard Yellow

Mustard Yellow is making a huge comeback this season, and no other color is as perfect for fall as Hay There from Essie’s 2019 Fall collection. The perfect transition shade from summer to fall, it looks great with all skin tones.

Brick Red Oranges

Nothing shouts October more than burnt red orange. This brick color will be everywhere. *Screaming ‘70s vibes, It’s A Piazza Cake by OPI is the perfect shade for those who want to rock orange this spooky time of the year.

Classy Brown

A classy brown will never go out of style; all Hail the Queen by Butter London is a cool toned brown with sparkles in it. This shade is perfect for an elegant manicure.

Forest Green

Green is just as big in the fall as it was in the 70s. Essie’s Sweater Weather is truly something special. This metallic green shade looks great for all skin tones. If you want to rock the green manicure, look no further.

Deep Plums

It would not be fall without sporting a deep plum red on your nails. Sally Hansen’s Wine stock has the right mix of red and purple to make your nails stand out this fall. Match with a deep plum or red lipstick and you are good to go.

Dark Blues

Blues and navies are on trend this fall. Deep enough to work for fall 2019, OPI My Favorite Gal Pal is light enough on your nails to see that gorgeous blue shade.

Light Gray

This fall, you will see gray manicures everywhere, so join the trend setters with Sally Hansen’s Namas-grey. This cool cream gray is classy on the nails and goes with every outfit imaginable, making this color the perfect choice.

Euphorically Euphoric

Euphorically Euphoric

The show everyone keeps talking about with makeup looks that just won’t quit.

If you are a teenager or anyone who keeps up with pop culture, you probably heard of HBO’s Euphoria. The show highlights the lives of suburban high schoolers as they try to find themselves with the assistance of alcohol, drugs, and sex. Skins 2.0, the show is a representation of an overly dramatic youth culture, and it only makes sense that the character’s makeup would be on theme.

How could you not adore the perfected looks that these characters have? Though a typical high schooler may not wear these looks, seeing the characters be in somewhat of relatable scenarios sporting dramatic looks is inspiring. Makeup is a part of the story with a handful of the show’s characters and plays as a metaphoric symbol in specific episodes.

The makeup artist behind the genius of these looks is Doniella Davy. Her signature looks utilize bold colors, glitter, rhinestone eyebrows, and intricate eyeliner designs – just a few examples. The looks never cease to disappoint and have inspired a makeup movement with the show’s audience. Davy states that she gets her inspiration from the late ’60s and ’70s, according to her interview with Vogue. The show’s popularity is due to the messages it sends its audience to be brave and be one’s most authentic self. Why be conventional is the question the series consistently challenges.

The character with the most iconic looks is Maddy (Alexa Demie), with her striking eyeliner detailed with rhinestones perfectly outlining her eyes. Jules (Hunter Schafer) comes second with her creative makeup looks using more neon eyeshadows and lively colors. Kat (Barbie Ferreira) has more of a dark gothic look, and her looks consist of smoky eyes and an eye-catching red lip. Rue (Zendaya) is more of a tomboy and does not follow suit. However, in the scene where she has glitter tears running down her cheeks is mesmerizing.

If you take a look at Davy’s Instagram, it is amusing to see all of the engagement her fans have with her looks. As they recreate her makeup and tag her handle, they reflect her rebellion to society’s beauty standards. Generation Z can’t get enough of the idea of self-expression, as this is so crucial in having confidence. Euphoria is an oasis of teens becoming who they are and explores why teenagers make rash decisions throughout the dark and distorted reality of the series. These looks only add to the drama.

Ballin’ on a Budget: Drugstore Makeup Dupes

Ballin’ on a Budget: Drugstore Makeup Dupes

College is expensive. From tuition, to eating out, to other everyday expenses, most students don’t have the extra cash to spend on high-end makeup. But have no fear! You can find dupes for Sephora classics at your local drugstore that have the same luxurious quality for a fraction of the cost. I’m going to break down 5 of the most poppin’ drugstore dupes for Sephora products that won’t break your bank account and will keep you looking fabulous!

1. NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer ($30) vs Maybelline Fit Me Concealer ($6.49)

Picture Creds: https://www.ulta.com/fit-me-concealer?productId=xlsImpprod2980149

The NARS creamy concealer is a cult favorite widely accredited for its high coverage and hydrating formula. In comparison, the Maybelline concealer performs just as well as the NARS concealer and is also praised for its long-lasting formula and natural finish on the skin. Maybelline also recently extended their shade range, so everybody on a budget has access to this bomb formula. The best part about the Maybelline concealer is that it costs just about one-fifth of NARS one and works equally as well!

Application tips: Simply apply under the eyes to cover any dark circles or discoloration, as well as to any blemishes or problem spots on the face and blend out with a beauty sponge for flawless skin!

2. Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder ($39) vs Maybelline Fit Me Loose Finishing Powder ($7.99)

Picture Creds: https://www.ulta.com/fit-me-loose-finishing-powder?productId=xlsImpprod16211173

When comparing the two setting powders, the difference between each formula is unnoticeable. Both powders are extremely finely milled and do not appear cakey or heavy on the skin. Although the powders are supposed to appear translucent on the skin, the Maybelline powder has eight different shades to appeal to a wider range of skin tones, whereas the Laura Mercier powder only has two. The only true difference between these powders is the price; Laura Mercier’s powder is one of the more expensive ones on the market, and Maybelline’s is very affordable at under $10.

Application tips: Apply to the under eyes and T-zone with a damp beauty sponge to melt the powder into the skin for a flawless, airbrushed look!

3. Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Highlighter in Champagne Pop ($38) vs Wet n’ Wild MegaGlo Highlighter in Precious Petals ($5.49)

Picture Creds: https://www.ulta.com/megaglo-highlighting-powder?productId=xlsImpprod16411015

Glow, baby! Highlighter is my personal favorite step of my makeup routine and is an absolute essential in my day-to-day life. Becca’s Champagne Pop is a cult classic, and its blinding golden glow is raved about by beauty gurus all over the world. However, Wet n’ Wild’s Precious Petals color payoff is similar to Becca’s with its golden hue, but it is only slightly darker, allowing it to work better on a wider range of skin tones. Both highlighters are absolutely beautiful and blinding, but Wet n’ Wild’s glow packs the same punch for only $5!

Application tips: Use a small rounded brush or a fan brush and lightly sweep across the cheekbones, cupids bow, and a little bit on the center of the forehead to glow all day long!

4. Natasha Denona Sunset Eyeshadow Palette ($129) vs Colourpop Yes Please Eyeshadow Palette ($16)

Picture Creds: https://colourpop.com/products/yes-please-eyeshadow-palette

Natasha Denona has one of the most raved about eyeshadow formulas at Sephora, and the Sunset palette is absolutely gorgeous; however, with a price point over $100, most people can’t afford to buy such a luxurious palette. But don’t fret! Colourpop’s eyeshadow formula is widely praised for being soft, blendable, and highly pigmented, and their prices make their products more accessible. Unlike the other products on this list, Colourpop is mainly an online retailer. However, you can also find their products in Ulta, and their formula triumphs over many drugstore brands with a similar price point. For an eighth of the cost of the Sunset palette, the Yes Please palette has the same color story and can also produce breathtakingly beautiful warm-toned looks.

Application tips: Use a fluffy blending brush to apply some of the matte colors in the crease and outer corner of the eyes and use a small flat brush to pack one of the radiant shimmers onto the eyelid for a simple yet elegant look.

5. Benefit Roller Lash Mascara ($25) vs L’Oréal Telescopic Mascara ($10.99)

Picture Creds: https://www.ulta.com/telescopic-mascara?productId=VP12153

Mascara is a key step in my makeup routine, and finding the perfect mascara for my short, straight, eyelashes has been a long journey. My personal favorite high-end mascara is the Benefit Roller Lash, which does a fantastic job of curling and lengthening my lashes without looking clumpy. The L’Oréal Telescopic mascara has a formula similar to Roller Lash, and also does an amazing job at transforming lashes to give a natural yet doll-like. Both mascaras have rubber wands with short bristles, but the L’Oréal wand is thinner, allowing for a more precise application.

Application tips: Start at the base of the lashline, and wiggle the brush all the way up to the tips of the lashes in order to evenly spread the product for killer lashes!

Perfect the Pastel Hair

Perfect the Pastel Hair

A Personal Perspective on Pastel Hair

Along with the more futuristic and trendy theme of this issue, one major beauty trend that I follow is pastel hair. I dyed my hair pastel pink last summer, and it was one the best choices I have made due to the compliments I receive but also feeling like I’m out of fantasy movie.

From pink to blue to silver – these days, there are so any color options and products to choose from when dyeing your hair. Here I have a few recommendations that I love as well as some tips and tricks when dyeing your hair.

Before I get to some awesome products to try out, I want to also give a few pieces of advice:

Tip One:

Lighten your hair. Although an annoying process  for your fabulous unicorn hair to show up, your hair needs to be a light blonde which can be natural or bleached. (If you don’t want to fully commit to full-on bleach, I suggest to get blonde highlights which I get to help my hair stay a little healthier but still get a similar affect.)

Tip Two:

It’s an investment. In terms of dyeing your hair and maintaining the color, it takes some amount of money; however, there still lots of versatile options that won’t cost hundreds of dollars.

Tip Three:

It’s not permanent. Probably one of the best things about colorful hair is that it so easy to change in terms of color and also effect. There are one-day lasting colors, colored shampoo and conditioners, semi-permanent dyes etc.

Now for the fun part…

1. Overtone

One of my favorite products is the Overtone Coloring Conditioner Mask that you leave it in for 20 minutes. Coming in so many colors for both light and dark hair, it is a great product to help maintain your color also to try out a color since it only lasts about a week. Loreal also has a shampoo and conditioner as well.

2. Loreal Colorista Range

Another option at your local drugstore is Loreal’s Colorista line. They do not have as many color options but offer great options to try out new colors that are easy to apply.

3. Kristen Ess Temporary Tint

Shower color tint is perfect to top up your color or add a tint of a fun for a few days. It is easy to apply and to remove (plus it smells like tutti fruit bubblegum). This spray is only offered in rose gold and lavender at the moment but they are expanding the range soon.

4. Bleach London Products

A little more expensive of an option but these hair products from Bleach studio based out of London have a great range of shampoos, conditioners, toners, and bleach kits in every color under the sun.

Simplifying the Crazy K-Beauty Routine: Easy Ways to Enhance Your Natural Beauty

Simplifying the Crazy K-Beauty Routine: Easy Ways to Enhance Your Natural Beauty

When one thinks about skin care, South Korea’s iconic beauty industry comes to mind. South Korea’s mastery of skin care is praised around the world but comes with a price – for both your wallet and time. It is common for Korean men and women to spend spend multiple hours a day pampering their skin and applying cosmetics to create that desired dewy glow, and thousands of dollars are spent in a year on serums, moisturizers, toners – just to name a few products – to accommodate the 10-step K-beauty routine.

Many South Korean celebrities swear by their extensive routines, but this should not be necessary to feel youthful and rejuvenated. Using dozens of products and spending endless hours in front the mirror may seem necessary for a clean beauty look. However, you can narrow it down to a few staple products and basic makeup techniques. Anyone can follow K-beauty trends – without having to break the bank and take away valuable free time. Here are quick and easy ways to simplify the complex K-Beauty routine for the same results.

Basic Skin Care –  a dewy face can start from simply a daily cleanse and moisturizing every morning and night. Your face will appreciate less layering of makeup and intense washing every day, and over time your skin will feel more refreshed and open up its pores
A Dab of Concealer – no need to apply a full face here – to avoid a cakey appearance, little dabs of concealer are sufficient to even out your complexion

Straight brows

3. Straight brows – unlike sharp brows in the west, brows in Korea are soft and straight. The slight definition is just enough to frame the face without overwhelming it. Youthful brows can be achieved through light strokes layered on top of concealer around the brow area that covers flyaway hairs. Check out this post by The Raeviewer for a more in-depth explanation as to how to achieve straight brows.

Tinted Lip Balm

Tinted lip balm doubled as blush – two-in-one? Yes, please! Ditch the bronzer and skip to a baby pink hue for flushed cheeks. Quick to apply if you are running late and want warmth in the face. The Baby Lips line by Maybelline are favorites by both beauty enthusiasts and those who simply want an additional pop of color without the hassle of wearing lipstick.

Winged eyeliner and Shimmery Shadow

A straight or angled down “puppy-eye liner” instead of a cat eyeliner makes for for innocent eyes. If you’re scared about using liquid or gel liner, it’s easiest to start with a lighter hand and gradually work your way towards a thicker line.

Face masks

K-beauty staples, facial masks bring the spa experience at your own fingertips. Clay, cream, sheet, exfoliating - just to name a few types of facial masks, there is one for every skin type. Not only do they come in a variety of forms, but the scents and packaging are fun and adorable as well.

Healthy Diet and Enough Sleep

These two should be common sense, but your skin, and overall health as well, need a balanced diet and enough sleep to look and feel at its best. Though you don’t need to resort to extremes, your skin will thank your choices to eat desserts in moderation, limit alcohol consumption, and drink more water.

We want to mimic the K-style “cutesy” makeup, but feeling comfortable in your own skin is the more important than any makeup routine. At the end of the day, makeup should only embrace, not determine, your confidence.

2019 Makeup and Hair Trends – Runway Edition

2019 Makeup and Hair Trends - Runway Edition

How should we do our hair and makeup for the upcoming spring and summer seasons? While most people use budding season and warmer temperatures as excuses to go lighter on the face and au natural with the locks, 2019 resort and spring runway models showed us else wise; if anything, we need to cake on more eye shadows (while avoiding the dreaded middle school look) and take time to play with our hair. Tedious? Conceivably. Worth the drama and flair? Absolutely.

On the Runway

Strong Brows

If you choose to bare it all, predominant brows help accentuate your features. Attention is drawn to the upper half of the face in which a bold lip flatters naked eyes, proved by models for Miu Miu. Bold brows make the wearer appear more youthful yet decisive and headstrong. Thankfully, bold brows are beauty staples that will stick around long after summer 2019.

Tight Braids

For her 2019 resort collection, German fashion designer Jil Sander presented crisp and clean-looking models, many of whom slicked their hair back and separated tresses with a middle part. Some models additionally styled locks into super tight braids. Benefits of a braid (or two) are that it tames flyaways, and heat is not necessary to create this look. Make this hairstyle more sleek by wrapping strands around the hair tie.

Electrifying Eyeliner

Eyes stand beautifully on their own, but neon colors on the ‘lids transform a bland look into either something refreshing for the day or a surprise for the night. Though many people choose fluorescent hues, white can also make a daring statement. Whether you apply a wash on the entire lid or choose to only drag a line near the lashes, people will notice you from miles away. A model for Christian Siriano wears pink eyeshadows to compliment the designer’s ready-to-wear dress.

Metallic Lips

Tight Top Knots

Glitter took over Jeremy Scott’s show, where both loose and foil-esque glitter sparkled on lips. When looking at the models, Halloween and aliens may come to mind. Yes, these two fit perfectly with metallic lips. However, a dramatic gloss can also achieve the same effect without going overboard.

Backstage at the Fendi spring 2019 ready-to-wear show, four models pose for the press. Rather than loosely bunching hair at the top in relaxed messy buns, models’ tresses are slicked back into tight top knots. To ease the tension, pull some strands of hair down to frame the face.

Tips for Oily Skin

Skin Care

Tips for Oily Skin

Oily skin needs as much – if not more – TLC as normal or dry skin types.

The CHallenge

Over cleansing the face damages dries up your outer layers flesh (though it may not feel like it). At the same time, abandoning to care for the skin altogether fails to combat the greasiness that begins to drown your T-zone mid-day.

Consequently, those with oily skin fall victim to having limited options for skincare routines. Fighting oily skin is a frustrating battle to overcome.

However, using the right products and going through a cautious skin routine, your face will feel more refreshed overtime.

Take care of your t-zone

Explained by licensed cosmetologist Jen Adkins, the T-zoneconsists of your forehead, nose, and chin. These are common places on our face that have excess oil, acne, and blackheads for people who have oily or combination skin type.” Though oils on your cheeks and eyelids build up throughout the day, focus efforts on caring for the three areas in the T-zones that are more prone to grease.

mattifying moisturizers

There is this misconception that oily skin does not need moisturizer. However, hydration is necessary – even when it seems as if moisturizer is the last thing that you need – for irritated skin. As mentioned earlier, the right products will help tame the oils your body produces. Applying an oil-free or mattifying moisturizer will get the job done without adding more shine. Products from Neutrogena and The Body Shop don’t break the bank, either.

Oatmeal masks are not only easy to make, but they benefit nearly every skin type, especially oily skin. To recreate Allure’s three-ingredient recipe, mix one raw egg and one tablespoon of lemon juice with ½ cup of cooked oatmeal. The oats soothe agitated skin, and the alpha hydroxy acids (AHAS) in the lemon juice “ binds surface skin cells together, allowing dead ones to be whisked away. This “glue” becomes denser as we age, slowing down the natural cell-turnover process that reveals younger skin.”

Have awareness of Foods that effect hormones

An imbalance of hormonal levels leaves both the body and the skin prone to more grease buildup. Find Your Glow Nutritionist Zoe Dent dvises that in addition to sugary foods, eating “dairy and gluten and not enough healthy omega-3 fats, zinc, probiotics, vitamins A, C, E and protein (collagen especially),” worsens the imbalance. Though these are not the direct catalysts for facial acne and blackheads, oily skin would benefit from smarter food choices.

Avocados and nuts are not only healthier fat options, but they are also fun to snack on and add on top of salads and side dishes.

Your face will thank you once you ditch the setting powder and start using some blotting sheets. Easy to carry around, blotting sheets can be applied anytime for quick touch-ups, whether after the gym or after a greasy cheat meal. If not using them already, blotting sheets should move towards the top of your shopping list, as they can also remove oils from the hair and phone screen. What’s not to love?

Bold Lip Shades for Every Skin Tone

Yeah yeah, we’ve heard it a million times from either our mom, aunt, grandma, best friend, etc., etc., etc. We’re taught from day one this unofficial official rule that your lipstick must compliment, never contrast, your makeup. This is appropriate for the office and meeting your SO’s parents, but sometimes we want our lips to be the star of the show. And there’s nothing wrong with that!

As Gwyneth Paltrow said, “[b]eauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick.” For every skin tone, there exists a shade of lipstick that perfectly pops.

Lip Colors for

Fair Skin

For blonds and redheads, shades of wine make bold statements can be seen from a mile away. Though the lips look luxurious on their own, warm eyeshadows make for a rich fall beauty look.

Take cues from actresses Amanda Seyfried and Emma Stone, who sport vampy lips and copper on the eyes.

Lip Colors For

Medium Light Skin

Proven by Youtuber Shannon Harris, a matte lip in Barbie pink brings out your inner girly girl. The Barbie pink neither overwhelms nor becomes washed out by your complexion. During the day, compliment this lip with a simple shimmery eye or amplify the lips at night with a dramatic cat eyeliner.

Jamie Chung

Let’s talk about mediums and magentas! Taking on a more pinkish hue than wine, magenta brings out the warmth and radiance in medium skin tones, demonstrated by the bold lip on actress Jamie Chung.

The suede shade by NYX will last you the entire night with limited reapplying.

A fuschia adds this energy and jolt to the lips without looking trashy or cheap. Both matte and sheer lipsticks will do medium dark skin tones justice. Keep the eyes light and make the cheeks dazzle with electrifying highlighter.

Medium Dark

Lip Colors For

Dark Skin

Corals can work for all skin tones but especially flatter darker skin tones. Sudanese model Alec Wek sports a glossy coral. The color – strong enough on its own – makes a powerful statement without needing warm eyeshadpws to compliment the lips.
