Eye See You: The History of Fashion’s Evil Eye (And How to Wear It)

Whether you are roaming the streets of Greece or your nearby mall, there is one symbol in fashion that tends to catch a few eyes: the evil eye. With its iconic royal blue color and mysterious shape, it is no wonder why this eyeball has been present on countless accessories and clothing. But where did this evil eye come from and how can you make it trendy for today?

The History Behind the Evil Eye

The evil eye has been around for almost as long as fashion has, dating back almost 5,000 years. In many cultures, this symbol is used to protect them from a curse that will cause bad luck or misfortune. The curse, also known as an “evil eye”, is assigned to someone that is oblivious to it. In order to avoid an evil eye, many cultures created amulets and jewelry with beads or pendants that look like an eye. The iconic royal blue bead with circles is, in some countries, called a Nazar, and is very popular in Arabic and Mediterranean countries, such as Turkey. Today, the evil eye is still present and well known in these cultures and is sold as all sorts of items, from souvenirs to high end jewelry.

How to Wear It

Whether one believes the curse of the evil eye or not, there is no denying that the evil eye is one of fashion’s most timeless symbols and wearing it will never go out of style. The evil eye works for everyone, and it is also very easy to pull off! From a little bracelet to a statement dress, the evil eye works for anything, and of course anyone.

The most common way to see the evil eye, 5,000 years ago or today, is with jewelry. Evil eye necklaces and bracelets have been seen all over the industry and are worn by many celebrities, such as Meghan Markle and Kim Kardashian. Just add a little bling to your wrist and you are good to go!

Statement Bags

One of my favorite ways to see this evil eye is when it makes a statement, and there is no better way to do that than with a cute bag! This statement clutch is perfect for jazzing up a simple outfit. For example, this bag from Barthelemy Rose works when you are going to a fancy event, or just having a fun night on the town.

Bold Clothing

Since the evil eye is such an iconic symbol, why not just show it off? Graphic t-shirts are always trendy, but having the evil eye symbol is an added bonus. I love this t-shirt from South Parade because it is super simple, yet bold at the same time. Just pair with some cute jeans and rock the evil eye.
